Depending on the geographical region in which we find ourselves, we will find different grape varieties. For example, in our winery the main types of grapes grown are:

Tannat: It is very cultivated in Uruguay, that it is an emblem of this country. Tannat is originally from France and very planted in America, not only can it be found in Uruguay but also in Argentina and Brazil. Its young leaves are reddish in color and with tan areas, its berries are rounded. This type of grape gives wines with a lot of color and very tannins. With a strong flavor that combines well with spicy dishes and fatty meats. This variety allows producing high quality wines.

  • In sight, it is deep red to opaque.
  • To smell, it is potent with aromas of raspberries, blackberries, black cherry, wood and red meat.
  • On the palate, it is strong, acidic and astringent if it is young and softens getting older.

Merlot: It is a type of grape that is widely used in the production of red wine. It is also one of the most widespread varieties in the world along with the Cabernet Sauvignon. Although its origin comes from the southwest of France, it can be found in several parts such as in Italy, Spain and South America. This strain is poorly adapted to drought, so it requires fresh and not very hot climates, since it loses its acidity and tannic balance soon.

This grape variety is very suitable for the production of young wines does not contain high tannins and these are very soft with the aroma of plums and flowers such as roses. They are wines that are easy to drink and do not need much time in barrel to highlight or show their potential.

  • In sight, it is an intense ruby ​​color with attractive violet hues.
  • To smell, its aroma encompasses a wide range of nuances such as currants, blackberries, red fruits in general violet, truffles and leather.
  • On the palate, it is pleasant and with flavors marked with raisins, plums and honey.

Pinot Noir: This variety is of French origin, from Burgundy City and has excellent qualities for the production of quality wines. The strains are of medium vigor and early maturation. Its low tannin structure and medium body awakens very refined and subtle sensations on the palate.

This strain is very delicate in its cultivation; it is sensitive to cluster moth and mites. It adapts well to temperate climates and accepts all types of soils as long as they have good drainage; it is good in calcareous soils. In general, this grape is described as a medium-bodied wine with an intense aroma of red fruits and an animal-hunting note.

  • In sight, they are usually wines of low color intensity, such as a red tile more opaque than bright. In addition its color varies according to its age, from a ruby ​​red with violet reflections when it is young, to an ocher orange after 8 to 10 years of guard.
  • To smell, they are the most aromatic wines that exist. They admit a good aging, evolving to a delicate aroma with aging, often appearing notes of cinnamon and coconut. Although the characteristic aroma is red and black fruits such as cherry, blackberries, plums among the highlights and flowers such as roses and violets.
  • On the palate, you feel a subtle, fresh flavor and fruity nuances.

Viognier: This strain, of white variety, has its origin in France, although it is also grown in various parts of the world. It adapts very well to acid soils and humid climates. It is quite resistant to pests and diseases although it is sensitive to extreme drought. This variety is characterized by difficult cultivation, low production and very late maturation.

With this grape it is possible to produce complex, powerful and high quality wines with a damask aroma. Their yellow-gold color invites them to drink them young.

  • In sight, it has a soft, bright and transparent yellow color.
  • To smell, you can feel a tropical fruit aroma like pineapple and mango.
  • On the palate, the wine feels fresh and lively.

There are more varieties of grapes for wine production in the world, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, which is the most international variety grown in almost all regions where red wine is made, there are also Syrah, Garnacha Tinta, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, among others.
